सही शब्दों में ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम के बिना कंप्यूटर टिन के टिब्बे से ज्यादा कुछ भी नहीं है, ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम ही वह जरिया है जिसकी सहायता से हम अपनी बात कंप्यूटर हार्डवेयर तक पहुॅचा पाते हैं या हार्डवेयर को कमांड दे पाते हैं। ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम हार्डवेयर और हमारे यानि यूजर्स के बीच एक पुल का काम करता है। अॉपरेंटिग सिस्टम की बदोलत ही आप की-बोर्ड कोई लैटर टाइप कर, प्रिंटर से उसका प्रिंट निकाल सकते हैं। यानि जितना बढिया अॉपरेटिंग सिस्टम आप टेंशन उतनी ही कम।
ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम के पास यूजर्स, हार्डवेयर, प्रोग्राम यानि सॉफ्टवेयर का पूरा हिसाब-किताब रहता है। यानि अाप इससे वही काम कर सकते हैं जिसकी सुविधा इसमें दी गयी हो इससे अन्य काम लेने के लिये अापको आॅपरेटिंग सिस्टम में अपनी सुविधानुसार प्रोग्राम यानि सॉफ्टवेयर इंस्टॉल करने होते हैं। जैसे लैटर टाइपिंग एवं ऑफिस संबन्धी कार्यो के लिये एमएस ऑफिस या इंटरनेट यूज करने के लिये ब्राउजर, इसके अलावा वीडियो और ऑडियाे प्ले करने के लिये अॉडियो और वीडियो प्लेयर।
